Learn More About Geist

Geist covers 1,900 acres. It is located primarily in the northeastern corner of Indianapolis and the southeast corner of Fishers, but small parts also reach into the nearby towns of Lawrence, Fortville, and McCordsville.  It spans three counties in Indiana (Marion, Hamilton, and Hancock), four voting precincts, three school districts (Lawrence, Hamilton Southeastern, and Mt. Vernon), and features five different ZIP codes!

It was constructed in 1943 by damming Fall Creek to provide water for the city. Upon completion, Geist Reservoir was the second-largest man-made lake in Indiana, providing approximately 7,000,000,000 gallons of water.  It is 35 miles long, with an average depth of 10 feet.

Geist Reservoir was named after Clarence Geist, a former owner of the Indianapolis Water Company who foresaw a deficit in Indianapolis's water supply and envisioned Geist Reservoir to preemptively address the problem.

In recent years, the Geist area has experienced rapid growth, and is considered prime real estate for upscale home owners. Many high-valued homes now line the reservoir's waterfront.  Geist’s median home price is $337,400, up 5.0% from last year.  Median household income is $106,379.

Signature Attractions

Mayor Scott Fadness has announced plans to create a 70-acre waterfront park at Geist Reservoir.  It will be developed on the last remaining undeveloped parcel of the reservoir, preserving the green space still exists.  Ideas still being discussed include a beach and cove area (perfect for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding), bike trails, a fishing pier, sand volleyball courts, a nature playscape, observation tower and even an amphitheater. The park could also be used as a start or finish line for races and events such as the Geist Half Marathon. No motorized boat launch will be permitted in the park area.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of the City’s plan is that the waterfront park would be open to the public. Fishers and Geist residents would be able to access the park and enjoy it with their families.

When it comes to shopping, Geist offers a variety of experiences, from specialty shops and boutiques to the stores, restaurants, and theatre at Hamilton Town Center.  Other notable restaurants include FoxGardinWoflie’s Geist, and Stone Creek Noblesville.
